The SNA would like to say HUGE congratulations to the graduating class of 2010!  All of your hard work has finally paid off and we wish you all luck in your upcoming careers!  Our spring semester schedule for SNA meetings are still being coordinated, so look for signs in our information window (located next to E241).  The meeting dates will also be posted in the student life office area.  Keep in mind that our meetings are geared towards helping each other to be successful, and we want to see more of your glowing faces at the meetings.  This semester we would like to focus on and create more opportunities to practice our skills and learn from each other!  At our last meeting, we were privileged to hear Beth Knudtsen-Spears speak about her specialty area of alternative medicine.  It was a great discussion and we want to thank her for taking the time to speak to us!  If you have any questions about the meetings, or want some more information about the Student Nurses Association contact: Alanna Tuttle [email protected] or Deb Mansell [email protected]

We are wishing you a great Christmas holiday and a Happy New Year!

We are starting to pull everything together for our Honors in Action program. The topic this year is The Democratization of Information. We are focusing on how language (i.e. grammar and spelling) has changed over the years. We have created a test and have given it out to people from different generations. The residents at Grace Point Crossing have been the older generation whom we have tested against college students at ARCC. Megan Aho and Douglas Sjerven have been working with the residents at Grace Point Crossing, and the two of them said that they have been having lots fun. When the test results came back from both of these groups, the Grace Point residents scored, on average, higher than the college students! This goes to show that things like texting may be making some of us lacking in basic grammar skills.

We also held a teacher appreciation dinner on the 15th. There was at least twenty teachers that were present. The theme of the dinner was a crock pot luck. We had one wall of a classroom full of various dishes all cooked in crock pots. All the teachers that were there said they had a good time and were appreciative of our effort to acknowledge all that they do. So again, I say thank you, on behalf of Phi Theta Kappa, to all the teachers here at ARCC.

I also want to say good luck to all the students here at ARCC. Finals week is soon upon us, and we all know how stressful it can be. Just relax and all your hard work will soon pay off. Have a happy Thanksgiving everyone.

On November 12th members of the ARCC Student Concert Choir packed their purses for an all-day tour. The students caravanned to the Coon Rapids Campus where they participated in an exchange concert with the Coon Rapids Campus’ Concert Choir.

After wards, they all traveled down to the U of M School of Music and enjoyed a brief lunch in the cafeteria. However, this was not what they were here for. After lunch, everyone gathered into the choir room for a Clinique with the U’s Director of Choral Activities Kathy Saltzman Romey. The students performed two of the pieces they were currently working on for Ms. Romey: “Erev Shel Shoshanim,” a Hebrew love song by Moshe Dor and Josef Hadar and arranged by Jack Klebano, and “Gloria in Excelsis Deo” from Franz Joseph Haydn’s “Heiligmesse” and arranged by Russel Robinson. She in turn offered advice and constructive criticism to help the students improve, not only on those two songs, but in their general choral skills as well.

After the Clinique, everyone traveled to the Rosedale Mall for some supper from the food court, and some shopping for those who weren’t hungry. Then it was back to the U for a choir concert in the Ted Mann Auditorium.

The students had a blast and many are eager to enroll in Concert Choir next term to see what the next Day Tour has in store. They all agree that Ms. Romey is a rock star and are eager to participate in another Musical Clinique with her.

If the above events sound like the perfect day to you, then don’t forget to enroll in the Spring Semester 2011 Concert Choir for one credit or as a free extra-curricular. Don’t worry if you can’t read music, or have never had any choral experience before, Concert Choir is for students of all skill levels. All you need is a love for music.

However, this semester is not yet over, and the students of the Cambridge Campus Concert Choir wish to welcome everyone to come to the Winter Concert on December 2nd at 7:00 in the evening. They will be performing alongside the Guitar Ensemble and you will have a chance to her the two songs they practiced with Ms. Romey in addition to many others.

Hello fellow nursing students and pre-nursing students! For those of you who missed out this year, we had an awesome time at Box City on October 18. Our "hospital" box was a huge success and we raised a total of $900.00 for New Pathways. We want to say a HUGE thank you to all of our sponsors!

We are also very excited about our upcoming flu clinic opportunity. Please, come and check out a meeting for yourself and get involved! The SNA hosts numerous experiences that look great on resumes and opportunities to gain confidence in the skills we are all learning in class. We are also dedicating half of our regular meetings to practicing NCLEX type questions and discussing testing techniques. We have some questions prepared for us by instructors and we pull questions from other sources as well. We want to be a support system and encourage each other to be the best nurses we can be.

There will be a special presentation from the student nurses who attended the nursing convention on Dec. 2 in room E21. Anyone is welcome to come and hear about the wisdom they gleaned and the information they brought back to share with all of us!

We want to see your wonderful faces!

Upcoming meetings: Oct. 28, Nov. 18 and Dec. 2. They will all be held in room E241.

See you there!
